Letter to Parents
To all parents and guardians:
Your child has been selected to participate in the Santa Ana Math Club. We at the Orange County Math Circle have partnered with the Santa Ana Unified School District to offer these classes for free at Lathrop Intermediate School. Orange County Math Circle is a student-run service learning organization, which is operated by local high school students. Our mission is to enable students from all over Orange County to explore mathematics and problem solving outside of the school curriculum. To be selected for this program, your child has demonstrated tremendous potential in not just mathematics, but also critical thinking and problem solving. The Santa Ana Math Club will meet once a month at Lathrop Intermediate School. The first meeting will be Saturday, October 23, 2010. All meetings will be on Saturdays and will begin at 9:00 a.m. Each meeting will follow this general schedule:
9:00 - 9:45 a.m. Instructional Period
9:45 - 10:30 a.m. Practice/Question Period
10:30 - 10:45 a.m. Break
10:45 - 11:30 a.m. Math Games
As a member of this program, students will be offered the opportunity to improve their critical thinking and problem solving skills in a group instructional setting. Students will work in small groups with other students from their school, while being taught by our skilled OCMC volunteers who will assist them during the practice rounds. All classes will be under the direct supervision of district teachers.
We hope your child will decide to participate in this program. Through these newly acquired skills, students will be able to perform better not just in mathematics, but in all aspects of their schoolwork which require problem solving. By working in small groups, students will also learn how to cooperate and work with other motivated young people.
At the end of these classes, in May, students will be prepared to compete at both the Orange County Math Field Day competition, and the Santa Ana Math Field Day in June. We encourage students to attend all sessions so that their potential in mathematics can be nurtured.
Sincerely,
The Orange County Math Circle
